Welcome back to Beer Scout Basics.  It’s getting cold outside and it definitely was at Chilly Water Brewing Company in downtown Indianapolis on Virginia Avenue.  Chilly Water is one of the new microbreweries to open in 2014.  It has a modern industrial feel with lots of chrome and glass.  I can definitely see the young professionals across downtown Indianapolis hanging out here after work for a few brews.

I will start with a little food and staff review.  I had the Cuban sandwich with seasoned chips on this trip.  I highly recommend both.  My barkeep was very nice but when I asked about the beers, he didn’t have much to say.  I really enjoy talking with the staff about their beers, what their favorites are and why.  I think this is one of the best parts of the craft beer community.  If you’re an owner or manager, my advice for you is to educate your staff and get them talking about the great things about your beers.

Another perk of my visits: I like picking up a unique pint glass each time.  Chilly Water had a glass shaped like a keg.  It was a great looking glass that I had not seen before, so I came home with one.  My wife isn’t too thrilled.

But what about the beers?  I had four really good beers on this particular visit.  You can’t go wrong with any of them.  All four choices are Chilly Water’s house taps so you should be able to find them on any day.

  1. Dyslexic Heart a 6.0% ABV, Dunkelweizen.  I don’t know what a Dunkelweizen is exactly, but it was my favorite of the visit.  The Dyslexic Heart was unique but very tasty.  I could drink a lot more of this one.
  2. Built to Last a 5.2% ABV, Pilsner.  Keeping it a little lighter this week for my top two.  This is not your standard off the shelf Pilsner.  If you like standard, off the shelf, American beers but want introduce yourself to a craft beer, I think you will like this one.
  3. Dark Sarcasm a 9.1% ABV, Russian Imperial Stout.  It wouldn’t be a flight without something from the dark side.  This was a very good dark beer with a very good mix of flavors.
  4. Sweet Revenge a 6.7%% ABV, American Pale Ale.  As usual, even though this is ranked this week as my number four, I would be happy to drink this beer all night long.

So that’s it for this installment.  Thanks for checking out BeerScoutBasics.  And remember when keeping it to the basics; drink what tastes good to YOU!
