25 Apr No dice on Dark Lord day tickets? Hit the brewpub another day
What smells like cherries, molasses and plums, has a “motor oil consistency” and “coats your palate with a palatial charred fruit and chocolate blanket?”
The answer is Dark Lord — as described by 3 Floyds Brewery — a Russian-style imperial stout brewed only once a year by the craft beer-maker in Munster, Indiana.
That time has come, as Dark Lord devotees will be making their annual pilgrimage to 3 Floyds for Dark Lord Day this Saturday to purchase the cult beer.
Tickets are sold out — but the brewery is still worth a trip when the crowds die down, not just to sample the range of beers with names like rock bands, but also for the locally sourced food served up in the brewpub.
Greatest hits include bacon fat popcorn, short-rib burgers and pizza. The cornmeal-crusted walleye sandwich is paired with a sweet blueberry compote and brie cheese, while the to-die-for brined and smoked chicken wings are covered in a sweet and savory dry coffee rub that is literally finger-lickin’ good. Several dishes include brewery ingredients, like the spent grain bread pudding with maple ice cream, cherry chutney and chocolate sauce made with Alpha Klaus porter.
Longtime Three Floyds disciples and new inductees can sample a range of the brewery’s beers at the brewpub, as well as some selections from other craft brewers. Hops fans might like Three Floyds’ Arctic Panzer Wolf IPA, Zombie Dust pale ale or or Alpha King American pale ale, while those who prefer a little less hoppiness should steer toward the Scottish-style Robert the Bruce ale, Gumballhead wheat beer or Backmasking, an oatmeal stout.
