Boone County Now Has A Malt House

Caleb and Whitney Michalke are hoping to bring back a little yesteryear with the opening of their own malt house in Boone County. The Sugar Creek Malt Co. is now up and running in rural Lebanon.

“Sixty or 70 years ago, and before prohibition, people did grow barley in Indiana,” Caleb said. “Purdue is actually getting ready to introduce a new barley breeding program in Indiana. So many people here have never seen it growing.”


So he has been working with local farmers on how to grow barley for the malt process.

“There are different varieties of barley. It can be planted in the fall or spring,” he explained. “It is similar to wheat, but has to be of higher quality since it is going to be used to make beer. So we’ve been educating the farmers on the management practices.”

“We are working with 10 growers who are producing barley, wheat and rye mainly,” Caleb said. “This will help local brewers to source local grain for their beer produced here in Indiana.” … CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY AT REPORTER.NET
