11 Jul Switchyard Brewing – Coming Soon to Bloomington!
An Indiana On Tap Exclusive
Indiana On Tap recently had an opportunity to speak with Kurtis Cummings of Switchyard Brewing. Kurtis and his business partner Michael Korus are actively working toward opening a new brewpub in Bloomington Indiana.
Bloom Magazine recently noted that Bloomington is a beer lover’s town. The Bloomington Herald Times in February reported that there was“still room for new craft beers on the Bloomigton scene.” Kurtis and Michael would certainly agree with both. Kurtis tells us that “Bloomington is already known as a fun, upbeat, foodie town with great tourist attractions. It is a community that supports all things local.” They are extremely proud of the community and its strong craft beer scene. Kurtis compares Bloomington to Asheville, NC, a town of similar population to Bloomington, which currently boasts fifteen craft breweries. They see Bloomington becoming the “craft beer/wine/distillery destination of the Mid-West.”
Michael and Kurtis have been home brewing for several years. They enjoy the craft and have a deep passion for the rich community craft beer facilitates. Switchyard has been a personal project of theirs for the last two years. Michael and Kurtis were each working on brewery concepts unbeknownst to each other. A mutual friend introduced them, and after sharing a couple pints, they quickly realized that their visions for opening a brewery were extremely similar. “More importantly however, our values and the desire to add to the fabric of Bloomington were spot on,” Kurtis says.
Kurtis tells us that they have had a lot of fun working on the menu for the brewpub. He described their plan as “casual upscale comfort food.” He believes that “there is just something really special when people sit together for a meal; relaxing after a hard day’s work, and talking about whatever comes to mind.” Switchyard hopes to partner with our local farmers to take advantage of “Indiana’s diverse agriculture.” They will strive to use the freshest products they can “to celebrate the Midwestern table.”
As far as the beer goes, Switchyard is keeping their plans more tightly under wraps. “We had a blast collaborating in my garage,” Kurtis says, “brewing pilot batches and sharing them with friends and family. We hope to share some of our hard work next year at various tasting festivals thought the Central Indiana region prior to our go live date.“
Much like their beer plans, they are also not yet able to announce their exact location. Kurtis did tell us that they are actively working with a local architect and have been meeting with city officials regarding a location on the City’s B-Line Trail. Renovations will take them well into 2015. The historic building they hope to utilize has its challenges, but Kurtis notes “If you live in the community in which you work, how can you not do something to make it a better place?”
Switchyard Brewing will be an “urban destination brewpub.” They knew early on that they wanted to locate Switchyard Brewing in a livable, walkable, and bikeable location where they could become part of the fabric of the community. Kurtis tells us that that they want their bewpub to be a place “to kick back on the patio, have an ice cold beverage, eat a great meal, and enjoy conversation with co-workers, friends or family.” He tells us that they “have looked at numerous sites, but ultimately being in the heart of our city and on the B-Line was of great importance.”
