My Favorite Bottle Shop: What Valpo’s Old World Market gets right

If you’ve ever visited downtown Valparaiso, you know that it is host to a wide variety of businesses. You’ll find a little bit of everything—a brewery, a bakery, restaurants that range from Mediterranean to local farm-to-table, a meadery which is slated to open April of this year, and this small intriguing shop on the corner of Washington Street and Indiana Avenue. At first glance, you may think of it as just a specialty food and wine store, mainly because their sign reads “fine food and wine.” This was my first reaction. I remember my first encounter with OWM because I was hesitant to enter, afraid I may be in over my head in regards to what they offered. My curiosity finally prevailed, and I am grateful it did, because once inside, I was sucked into the world of craft beer.

Chris and Megan Marolf are the owners of Old World Market, and you will see at least one of their smiling faces every time you visit the shop. They and their staff have such a passion for their products and it really shows. When you first enter, you are greeted by specialty food items, a beautifully displayed deli case, and shelves of wine. It’s not until you reach the back corner of the store do you find their craft beer selection. Chris was the first person I met upon entering OWM, and he so graciously took time out to explain the different craft beers he carried.

When you first decide to venture into the craft beer community, it can be intimidating. You have so many questions but don’t want to look like a newbie. No question was too basic for Chris to answer. He gave me many recommendations and helped me build my own six pack—which is now one of my favorite things to do. I was so excited when I brought those first beers home that I could not wait to try them with my friends. We had our own tasting party. At that point I knew relatively nothing about the craft beer industry, but what I did know was that I was on my way to learning more.

While Old World Market does not house the largest selection or even always the lowest prices, I always return because of the impact that Chris and Megan have had on me. When I was looking for someone to interview for a class project, Chris and Megan took time out of their busy schedules and let me come check out OWM afterhours. Every time I enter I am greeted by name. This is what makes great business. Not many people love what they do quite as much as these two. Their dedication, passion, and knowledge is what keeps customers coming back. They take the time to pick each and every item they have on the shelves, and that gives me all the confidence I need to know that I am purchasing a quality product. It’s always an adventure heading into OWM to see what’s on the shelves, and I look forward to that for a long time to come.
