Have you ever wondered how people create such perfect beer and food pairings? If so, then you would probably enjoy taking the CraftBeer.com Beer & Food Course. Oh, and the best part: it’s free.

The course was put together by two members of the Brewers Association, which runs CraftBeer.com: Executive Chef Adam Dulye and Craft Beer Program Director Julia Hertz. They designed the course for culinary students, but anyone can download the course and educate themselves.

Why go through the trouble of providing free beer and food pairing education?

“Beer should be an integral part of culinary education. It accounts for $101 billion in sales in the U.S., compared to $37.5 billion for wine, and is an expected addition to restaurant beverage menus. With this course, culinary educators and students join the 4,000+ American craft brewers who are helping beer reclaim its place at the dinner table.”

CraftBeer.com offers the course in a free digital version, which you can download yourself, or as a printed version. The printed version comes as a saddle-stitched handbook with full color pages, and is priced between $4.95 and $6.95, depending on how many copies you purchase.

Downloading the 73-page PDF requires you to fill out some information for the website, but it is a fairly easy process. You also quickly realize that printing out the handbook would likely be more costly than simply buying the printed version.

The course is split into four sections:

Section One: History of Beer, The Rise of Craft Beer, Homebrewing & Craft Brewing, Brewing Process, Ingredients in Beer, and Overview of Beer Styles.

Section Two: Who Classifies Beer Styles, Identifying Flavor Profile of Beer, How to Present & Pour Beer, and Intro to Styles: Tasting #1.

Section Three: Identifying Beyond Beer Flavor Profiles, Intro to Styles: Tasting #2, and How to Pair Craft Beer with Food.

Section Four: Craft Beer & Cheese, Interactive Tasting & Pairing, Fresh, Aged, and Cellared Craft Beer, and Designing a Beer Dinner.

The handbook is laid out similar to a textbook. It provides a thorough breakdown of beer styles and flavor profiles, all while keeping the reader engaged in the material. This course is perfect for anyone looking to expand their knowledge in the world of beer and food pairing, not just culinary individuals. As a consumer, knowing more about how a chef decided to pair beer with specific food would make any pairing event even more enjoyable.
