Great Black Swamp ‘Intern’ Opens Ind. Brewery

Like many in the craft brewing industry, Jesse Sensenig didn’t start alone.

Sensenig volunteered his time for about two years at Toledo’s Great Black Swamp Brewing Co. He drove from Bluffton, Ohio, to help on brew days and spent many hours on the phone with cofounder Paul Traver learning the ins and outs of the industry.

Sensenig’s craft beer internship gave him the confidence and know how to open Goshen Brewing Co. in Goshen, Ind., about two hours west of Toledo, in May.

Sensenig, 36, a 1997 Archbold High School alumnus, said he fell in love with the craft beer culture when he and his wife, Amanda, lived in Colorado while attending graduate school. When the couple returned to northwest Ohio, he said he “really dove into homebrewing, just meticulously working at recipes and fine-tuning my skills and working a lot at it.”

Sensenig, who worked as a mental health counselor at the high school level for about 10 years, was introduced to Traver by his brother Joel, who does public relations for the annual Glass City Beer Festival…
