Flat12 has been producing beer in Indianapolis since 2010, and is currently the fourth largest Indiana brewery in terms of production. Along the way, they have had a good time.  I have always enjoyed visiting their tap room, whether it be for an event or a growler fill.  The Boys Night Oat release was no exception. Recently they had collaborated on a recipe with the Flix Brewhouse in Carmel, and this was the Flat 12 release party for the beer. Boys Night Oat is a Belgian pale ale made with oats.  This was an interesting collaboration as a slightly different recipe was used at Flix who had their release party two weeks ago with the viewing of the movie Animal House.  This prompted Flat 12 to do a toga party, but amusingly only Sean Manahan, Flat 12’s brewmaster was donning one.  Someone from Flix had the idea of making a toga out of a grain bag, but that fell through.

So on this chilly Wednesday evening, a small party commenced with the Boys Night Oat flowing.  The tasting room has a bohemian feel to it, and Sean looked right at home pouring  ale in his Toga. I sat with the Flix crew for a bit and their brewmaster Chris told me he is busy getting nine crazy beers ready for the end of April. Brewery tours were offered and I was lucky enough to be shown around by the intern Bo who let me sample Flat12’s upcoming Irish stout which is still in the tanks.

The Flat12 staff were enjoyable and it was nice to see the whole Flix crew there as well.  Both camps conveyed that it was a fun collaboration and I was told this was good people making good beer together!  I hope this partnership is not a one off. I thoroughly enjoyed the Boys Night Oat ale which had a complex flavor brought on by the marriage of hops and Belgian yeast.  I was also fortunate to try several other offerings including the black IPA and the red ale.  My personal favorite from the Flat 12 catalog is the Pogues Run Porter, and I made sure to have one as well.  It seemed intimate to be drinking along side the brewery staff,  and the two hours allotted for the party were over far too quickly.

The night at Flat 12 was made complete with a visit to Hoagies and Hops,  a sandwich shop located inside the brewery.  Hoagies are Pennsylvania subs, and the shop owner is a transplant from Philadelphia.  The brewery staff said they love her food offerings which include an assortment of deli sandwiches.  For this writer who grew up in Pennsylvania, I found the experience amazing from the thinly sliced sweet onions, and tomatoes, to the right amount of Italian dressing.   It was as good as I remember from my childhood.

All good things come to an end as the night closed.  Sean thanked me for coming and warmly invited me back.  Flat 12 continues to host fun events, and I encourage readers to visit their tap room for a pint, a growler fill, and a hoagie.  Boys Night Oat is available on tap and in bombers, it is definitely worth checking out.  If you’re in Carmel, check out Flix’s version as well!
