Beeraoke at Flat12 – What more do we need to say?

Beeraoke at Flat12 – What more do we need to say?

Hidden musical talent, a dinosaur costume, and great beer. Where was this you may ask? Flat12 supplied this and much more last Saturday night at their very first Beeraoke event. The night was just right with weather ripening for the beer-drinking singer. Arriving to the event, the doors to the taproom were open, ‘80s music bumping in the background, and beer flowing to packed tables anxiously awaiting to hear the first brave soul to belt out their vocals for all to hear.

Before the event started, I was able to grab a Pogue’s Run Porter and sit down with Flat12’s marketing and events coordinator, Valerie Green, to get some insight about the excitement of the night’s event. For nearly a year and a half, she was hounded by her friends and colleagues to have karaoke at the brewery. She finally caved in and the event was a huge success!

First of all, if you have never been to Flat12, you are missing out. When you walk into the taproom, you are automatically greeted by warm-welcoming bartenders who are eager to get their delicious beer into your hands. Tables are scattered throughout the room and a large projector screen plays a variety of shows to keep you entertained if your friends are being totally lame. Out back is a large space for a beer garden when the weather is perfect along with some fire pits and lights to tie it all together. Saturday night however was all about the singers.

A stage was set up with a fierce fuchsia-colored curtain so the performers could be on display for all to see. With a DJ keeping the beats going, brave beer drinkers signed up to give it their all at Beeraoke. Some even signed up friends and forcefully encouraged them to take the stage, which we were all pleased when they did. The house was rocking as people belted out their best versions of the Rolling Stones, Garth Brooks, and Snoop Dogg, just to name a few. Even Valerie and a few of the brewmasters took a shot at the mic. Friends from local breweries stopped by, such as Broad Ripple Brewpub, to check out the event and to drop a few versus themselves.

I enjoyed every minute of the event and got to drink some really delicious beer in the process. Boys Night Oat, which is a Belgian Pale Ale they created with Flix Brewhouse, was a big hit. With its tropical hop flavor, anyone who enjoys a nice crisp beer would really appreciate this newly created concoction. But as the night carried on and the weather turned cool, I found myself grabbing a few more porters. The Pogue’s Run Porter is that delicious blend of caramel and chocolate, rich in color, but isn’t thick and heavy like most porters out there. I truly enjoyed letting my taste buds dance to this one.

The company, the singing, and of course, the beer, made for an amazing Saturday night at Flat12. I truly hope it doesn’t take a year and a half to get the next Beeraoke on the calendar.  But in the meantime, I highly recommend giving your taste buds a treat and make your way down to Dorman Street to the taproom and try a few. You can thank me later.
