9 Interesting Things You Might Not Know About 3 Floyds Brewing

So we all know that 3 Floyds Brewery is amazing. Their fresh and interesting flavors are shown in their beers, unique food, and their crazy beer bottle designs. This has made them one of the best breweries in the nation. If you haven’t tried their Gumballhead (their take on an American wheat beer,) stop whatever you are doing and go directly to the nearest distributor. Do not pass go, do not collect $200… just go. Now! But Gumballhead isn’t their only disturbingly different and intriguing craft beer. Oh no. That’s just the start. And amazingly enough, that’s where I’m going to start on 9 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Three Floyds Brewing.

1. They have a ton of beer.
I mean a lot of freaking beer. I was aware of Gumball head, Zombie Dust, and of course their flagship Alpha King. But that is just the beginning. There are 83 beers to choose from when you go to the pub. Plus, they have their seasonal beers. 12 of them in fact. And of course there are their collaborative beers with friends which are getting up to the count of 38. That’s a lot of different beers. Yes, some of them are only during certain times and certain seasons, and yes some of them are made with other brewers/friends. But let’s face it, that is a lot of beer.

2. They started out “not normal”.
When Three Floyds first started back in 1996 they didn’t have much money. Just an old cola tank, a five-barrel Frankenstein wok-burner-fired brew kettle,  and a re-purposed open Swiss cheese fermenter. Not exactly the high quality million dollar equipment you see there today.

3. They have won a plethora of awards.
Three Floyds has been best in the world in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and coming in as number 3 in 2014 according to 1 million beer reviews logged on RateBeer.com. Last January at the Chicago Brewpub Shootout, they won 3rd Place for Beer, 2nd Place for Food and Beer Pairing, and 1st Place for Food. They were also up for USA Today’s Best Brewpub in the 2016 Best Reader’s Choice Travel Awards, and was a finalist in USA Today’s Entrepreneur of the Year contest. They keep making great beer, so they keep getting great rewards.

4.Their Food.
The food they serve at Three Floyds is not your typical bar food. The chefs, Pat Niebling and Scout Hughs, use their creative genius to create something twisted and delicious. Even in their snacks section, you’ll get something you’ve never seen before. Like Bacon and Porter Caramel Corn. What?! How did they even come up with that delectable delight? From their small plates to their pizzas, you know without a doubt, you’re in for something special.

5. Their merchandise.
They have a wide range of merch up for grabs at the pub as well as online. And it is all as unique as their beers. Shirts, hats, glassware…you want, it they got it. And all of them feature different beers with their distinct heavy metal, “not normal” style.

6. The way to find their beer.
Feeling a little thirsty for some Gumball head, or Alpha King? No worries. Just log onto their website www.3floyds.com/distribution/ put in your zip code and it tells you the closest bars, and stores where their beer is sold. Pretty awesome! I just found out that the liquor store right behind my house sells it. Score!
In fact… I’ll be right back. Just give me a minute to walk across the street. See you in a few.

7. The FFF stands for Family
The company was created by brothers, Nick and Simon Floyd as well as their father Mike Floyd. They opened in 1996 very small and uncertain. But have expanded with tremendous growth at being one of the best breweries in the nation. They have recently undergone  a million dollar renovation and are now full speed ahead in the craft beer business, brewing 50,000 barrels in 2015.

8. Beer isn’t the only thing on their minds
It was recently announced that they have purchased the building next to their current brewery to build a distillery for gin, whiskey, and other sprits. More booze is always fun, right?

9. Darklord Day
Tickets this year sold out quickly and were set at an impressive amount of $200 a ticket. Pretty amazing. There are no general admission tickets sold to this event. You have one chance of going and you better be on it quick. Keep up with their Facebook and Twitter for postings or you will miss it. The ticket does include: Entrance to the festival grounds, 4 bottles of 2016 Dark Lord Imperial Stout, 1 bottle of a rate Dark Lord variant, and a souvenir tote bag which of course has food and drink vouchers inside for Three Floyds. So if you want to try one of the most elusive beers in Indiana, make sure you sign up next year for Darklord Day. Then you can brag to all us craft beer lovers who didn’t get the chance!

My brother just picked up a can of Three Floyd’s Malt Whiskey Warspite. I’m curious about the Warspite name as my Dad worked on the Warspite in Cornwall, England post WWII.. It went down in Marazion, Cornwall and my Dad did underwater welding on the boat. My parents and brother and I are from Cornwall. I remember many years ago at Porter Memorial Hospital I met Dr Floyd and we talked about England and our connection to Romford, Essex. Would like to know your connection to the Warspite. Thank you and congratulations on your success!
