09 Jun HogStock Live Music and Beer Festival Brings Together Beer, Bands and BBQ

Beer and pizza, beer and friends, beer and BBQ, beer and sports – beer makes just about anything better. You should definitely add music to that list because there aren’t many things more enjoyable than taking in some good live music while you have a beer in one hand and tap out a rhythm with the other.
The days of juggling a 32 ounce Coors Light while trying to find your seat for the Stones concert aren’t completely gone, but it’s much more likely that you can now find a good beer to go along with a good band. Craft breweries have been added to concert venue menus for sure, but I still enjoy most a day or evening at a brewery with great local music or musicians just on the verge of breaking out.

Indiana beer festivals are bringing in great music – Savor Lebanon had Duke Tomatoe this year and Tipton on Tap will showcase Password Reset in July. Grand Junction Brewing’s Rock the Junction has always been part beer fest/part music fest, as has Rushville Libations by the Levee and Wedgestock in Middlebury (brought to you by Wedgewood Brewing – congrats on opening the new taproom!).
This weekend there is a new entry to this arena in Columbus, the Inaugural HogStock: A Live Music & Beer Festival. Hosted at Hog Molly Brewing on the northwest side of Columbus (830 Depot Street), HogStock starts at noon on June 12 and will continue through 10pm that evening (get tickets here). It takes a lot of music to fill ten hours, and that’s exactly what they have.
In order of play, the music acts for HogStock will include Acoustic Edge, Matt Rust, Pat Gill, Timothy Scott, Lindsey Flannery, Beep Boop, The McGuires Band, 3 Beards Strummin, and 3 Beards and Soul Patch. That’s a lot of music, but you can never have too much music.
It’s no secret that Walter and I are fans of Hog Molly’s people and their beer, and we’ll definitely be hanging out to have a few pints and take in the music and atmosphere on Saturday. We latched on to the Hog Molly star just after they opened and have partaken of just about all the beers they have offered – no misses in the bunch. We love the two beers they’ve done as bottle releases (and so did everyone else if you go by how fast they sold out); it’s dang near illegal for me to visit without getting a pint of the Remember the Tartans Scottish Ale.

And as we alluded to above, beer goes well with food too, so make sure to come to HogStock with a big appetite. The food trucks on hand will include Jalapeno’s Grill from Seymour, Pig & Tasty BBQ from Columbus, Junkyard BBQ from Seymour, Geri Girl Bakery of Edinburgh, and Party Chef from Columbus.
HogStock is brought to you by Hog Molly and Scott Wilson State Farm Insurance as a benefit for the Columbus Area Arts Council, the people that bring us such fine programs as their public art works, youth programs, the 411 Gallery, and the First Fridays programs for families. Even more, teachers in the Bartholomew County School Corporation can get tickets online for half price; just another way that Hog Molly and State Farm are giving back to the community.
It’s going to be a good crowd on Saturday, and parking at Hog Molly is limited, so you might want to consider carpooling. Make sure to bring lawn chairs as the crowd will easily outnumber the places to sit, but don’t bring your own food or drink, since no outside consumables will be allowed on site. You’ll also want to make arrangements for the kids and the pooch, since HogStock is a 21+ human event. Food, music, and friends – all things that go great with beer, and HogStock is sure to deliver on all counts. Make the trip to Columbus this weekend, the weatherman says it’ll be 88˚F and partly cloudy, so the cold beer will be tasting even better.
