I mustache you a question: What’s your favorite beer to celebrate Movember? Wait, you don’t know what Movember is? Ok, first I’ll tell you about Movember and then we need to talk about you staying up to date on current events. Movember is the one month – November – out of the year that it is socially acceptable for every male to grow their very own chia pet on their face.
Movember’s roots can be traced back to about 2003 when the Movember Foundation was founded. The foundation’s goal has been to bring awareness of men’s health issues – prostate cancer, testicular caster, poor mental health, and physical inactivity – to the masses, but instead of having a color or ribbon, they ask men to grow the best mustache or beard they can. It’s a great idea because it’s easier to convince a man to grow facial hair – we all want to even if we can’t – than it is to get him to participate in say a 5k (unless that 5k involves beer).
In the 12 years since the foundation was created, they’ve grown from 30 Movember participates to over 5 million. That’s a lot of mustaches and beards. You’re welcome, ladies.
Now that Movember is completely mainstream, everyone’s been capitalizing on the idea. And that includes breweries. Whenever you enter a brewery, it’s impossible to not see a multitude of hairy-faced men doing their part to brew or serve the best damn beer they can.
You may be asking yourself, “What beer should I drink in celebration of Movember?” Well lucky for you I’m here to answer that question with my Top 5 Indiana beers to drink in celebration of Movember.
Flat12 brews this limited release beer in celebration of Movember. Despite it being aged in a bourbon barrel, Moustache Ride Red clocks in at only 6.0 percent ABV; still enough to put some hair on your face.
“A rich American amber with hints of roasted malt and very moderate hop bitterness,
aged in a bourbon barrel with real vanilla beans. Aroma is dominated by vanilla and bourbon, hints of caramel, grain, and chocolate. Flavor is smooth and rich – cream soda, with a slight alcohol kick.”
2. Fountain Square Brewery Soul Ride IPA
Something about Fountain Square’s Soul Ride IPA always makes me think of Samuel L. Jackson. And when I think of Samuel L. and soul, I think of one movie: Pulp Fiction. I’d like to believe drinking a pint of Soul Ride IPA would help your facial hair grow into this.
“This American IPA features citrus and tropical fruit hop aromas layered above a slight malty sweetness. Light in color and easy on the palette, an IPA that goes down smooth with a crisp hoppy finish.”

Being muscular, or barrel-chested, is a “manly” attribute. Growing an exquisite beard or mustache is also considered a “manly” attribute. So putting the two attributes together must make the ultimate man. Upland Brewery combined the two attributes to make a “manly” beer: Barrel Chested Barleywine.
“This complex strong ale pours a beautiful deep copper with hues of bright mahogany and a creamy tan head. The essence of rich caramel, biscuit, toffee, and fig are coalesced during a long maturation period in oak barrels previously used by the Willett Distilling Company which arrive at the brewery still dripping with bourbon (which our brewers didn’t let go to waste). Over time, these barrels add their own flavor contributions of vanilla, toasted oak, and sweet bourbon undertones. At 9.5% ABV, this beer is a gentle giant with a seductive sweetness and intriguing complexity.”
Indiana has a lot of Irish Heritage. Irish men are great at growing mustaches and beards, and they are generally red in color which helps them stand out. Indiana City brews this Irish Red beer to celebrate that heritage and it’s only right to salute the bearded and mustachioed men who helped build this great city by drinking a pint yourself.
“We brewed Irish Hill Ale to honor the rich Irish heritage of the neighborhood we’re in, Irish Hill. Irish Hill was home to the hard working, blue-collar Irish immigrants who quite literally built Indianapolis. Irish Hill Ale is a traditional Irish Red with sweet malt flavor and subtle hop bitterness. Sláinte!”
5. Tow Yard Horse Power IPA
Muscle cars are as manly as beards and brews, and they all go hand-in-hand. And Tow Yard’s Horse Power IPA makes my list because it hits you like a 409 Chevy Big Block with its 7.8 percent ABV. It’s a great beer to drink while growing your Movember mustache and tinkering with your muscle car.
“Our house beer is a Double Pale Ale. Maris Otter starts out our grist, followed by some Munich, Aromatic, and Light Crystal malts to round out the flavor. This beer is bittered with Magnum and Centennial, followed by late kettle additions of Cascade, Crystal and Styrian Golding hops, which adds a depth of flavor and complexity to this beer.”
