11 Jul Holiday Hangover: Sun King’s GFJ Tapping at Scotty’s Brewhouse
The day after a holiday can sometimes be a bit blah, but on July 5, I was able to enjoy a memorable evening in Brownsburg, Indiana. Sun King Brewing Co. and Scotty’s Brewhouse paired up for the tapping party for GFJ, formally Grapefruit Jungle. Sun King also bought their three flagship beers, and their seventh-anniversary beer, the Siete Mexican Lager. I always like to try new offerings from Sun King, so the Siete Mexican Lager was of great interest to me.
When I arrived, the dining room and patio were nearly full. I made my way to the bar where Koy from Sun King was chatting with several managers from Scotty’s. They were discussing the merits of sour beers, and I was eager to enter the discussion. At a Sun King tap takeover several years ago, I was lucky enough to try their Sour Princess but have never seen it again since then. Koy told me they have no plans to brew it in the future, but to look for the Velour Soccer Mom later this month. It is a sour from Sun King aged in oak barrels and flavored with raspberry and hibiscus.
It was taco Tuesday at Scotty’s, so my first order of business was to order the Siete Mexican Lager to pair with a chicken and beef taco. The lager came out first; it was light and delicious, with just a little more body than I expected. It drank pure and smooth and went down very well with the tacos, which were superb.
I had been looking forward to that experience, but I also wanted a GFJ, and when it came, I was satisfied as usual. I first tried it several years ago, and like others, feel it is one of Sun King’s jewels. I was still hungry and ordered the Spicy Steak sandwich. It went very well with the beer. The pairing of peppers with hops is one my favorites, and it did not disappoint tonight.
The tapping was a success, and I was glad I could attend. Scotty’s will have the Siete and GFJ on for a while, and I strongly encourage you to try them soon. And if you haven’t been to the Sun King brewery, set aside some time to visit. The tasting room is worth it alone.
