I’d like to think that I live an overall healthy lifestyle. I eat a well-rounded diet, try to get my steps in, practice yoga, and make a conscious effort to take care of myself. But when I tell people I love craft beer, I often get a confused glance as a response…

Here’s some of craft beer’s many health benefits:

1. Antioxidants – Hops may be the key to life. The New England Journal of Medicine found that a chemical called xanthohumol (found ONLY in hops) is a powerhouse. It’s even been investigated for cancer and Alzheimer’s treatment. If that doesn’t encourage you to pick up an IPA over a domestic I have no idea what would.

2. Heart Health – A study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reported a 20-40% decrease in coronary artery disease in those that were moderate alcohol drinkers. Multiple studies have also shown that alcohol consumption raises your HDL (good cholesterol) and decreases your LDL (bad cholesterol).

3. Prevent Kidney Stones – The Journal of Epidemiology reported a 40% decrease in kidney stones among BEER DRINKERS specifically. Beer does start with water, and the fluid hydration may be the critical factor since this finding was only noted solely in beer drinkers. Take that Chardonnay.

4. Bone Health – Flavonoids found in hops are predicted to act as a natural hormone replacement. Some studies even go as far to say that flavonoid consumption has a strong association with bone than general fruit and vegetable consumption. The National Institutes of Health stated dietary silicon (found in beer → the less watered down the better) may be crucial for the growth and development of bones and connective tissues. I’ll toast to not breaking my hip.

That being said, the recommended amount of “moderate” alcohol consumption is classified as a 12 oz of 5% alcohol content. Men get 2 drinks per day, ladies get 1. Knowing that that’s all I get, I always make it count.

Cheers!
