It seems like everybody is trying their hand at writing about craft beer these days, including NBA world champions.

The Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh, currently sidelined for the second time in two seasons with issues stemming from blood clots in his legs, has some time on his hands now as travel has become limited of late. Bosh, something of a renaissance man in this era’s league, originally attended Georgia Tech to try his hand at graphic design, computer programming, and management. Though he left college after a strong freshman year, Bosh is still pursuing learning how to code and is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Dallas Association of Minority Engineers.

It seems now that the 12-year big man has turned his sites on craft beer now, in a new post to his website titled, “Best Beers For A Barbeque.

In the short-but-sweet post, Bosh describes how best to choose a beer for drinking outside in the summer heat (Bosh spends most of his time between Miami and Dallas when not on the road, so he knows heat), how to get your non-craft friends to branch out and try new beers outside their comfort zones, and pairing beer with the food you’re grilling.

“One of the cool things I like to do with beer is layer different ones to complement what I’m cooking. Grilled meats usually have that charred taste from the grill, so a beer with roasted flavors—something like a porter—does the trick for a nice pairing. A newer craze that’s been around for a while is black IPAs. You get that roasted flavor along with the hoppiness of an IPA. I tried it for the first time a few months ago and loved it. So if you’re having a burger, these beers go perfectly!”

There aren’t many athletes talking about craft beer these days. Perhaps it doesn’t fit into their strict diets, maybe deals between their leagues and macro breweries inhibit that, or maybe there’s still a cultural gap. Either way, to have one of the best ambassadors for the NBA talking about craft beer in a relaxed, knowledgeable, and accessible way can only be good for the industry as a whole.

Chris, anytime you want to write something for Indiana On Tap, you have an open invitation.
