On the 16th of December (not a long, long time ago) Twenty Tap, in Broad Ripple hosted Star Wars Night. Obviously this was in celebration of theStar Wars: The Force Awakens which comes out on December the 18th. I’ll be seeing it tonight, Thursday the 17th, at 11:30 pm with our Managing Editor, Adam Schick (Hey guys – Ed.), at Flix.
The event had what you would expect at most Star Wars events: cosplay enthusiast, Star Wars décor, photo ops, the works. I saw several Vaders, Han Solo’s, a BUNCH of Chewie’s, and one very pretty Princess Leia, wearing her slave costume (as seen in episode 6). Sadly there was only one Jedi. The décor included life size replicas of Boba Fett and an Imperial Storm Trooper from episodes 4-6, a lightsaber wielding Yoda and Han Solo while frozen in carbonite.
- Phantom Menace White IPA, 6.2%
- Alderaan Princess IPA, 6.8%
- Agent Kailus Oats Oatmeal Stout, 5.2%
- Padawan Killa Double IPA, 8.5%
- Mos Eisley Tuskenfest German Lager, 6.0% (pretty darn good too)
- Nitro Chewy Brown Imperial Brown Ale, 7
Along with those there were 2 Star Wars beers from Triton. The Forks Awakens was…well let’s say the Force is strong with this one. The joke in the name is that “Forks” sounds like “Force,” and a triton has Forks…I hope everyone gets it. It’s a triple aged Belgian, aged in Basil Hayden (a fine bourbon) barrels for 12 months. And, oh by the way, it was 15%! These have also been known to be used at Bantha tranquilizers, due to their high alcohol content. While delicious, drink with caution.
The beer that ran out before I got there at 8:00 was the Holocron, also by 20 Below. A holocron, for those who don’t know, is an object that hold immense knowledge and data. Used by both Jedi and Sith, if you can actually manage to find one (which is nearly impossible) the holocron will project a 3-D image of some all-knowing, all-powerful force user and he/she will teach you some cool shit. The Holocron beer was an IPA. I’m sad I missed it.
I think the best think about the event was something personal. Since childhood I’ve loved the Star Wars universe Mr. Lucas created. I’ve seen all the films, read many books, and even still use a Star Wars pillow cover. More than one girl has scoffed at this. While I’ve always thought that I was a little different for being so in to the saga, this event brought a feel of community with it. I expected just to hang out with a handful of male nerds. Instead the place was packed with guys and girls, of every type, which showed that though the series is 38 years old, it means as much to others as it does to me. Suck it James T. Kirk.
