Nestled quietly in the heart of Brown County, Indiana sits little Nashville. Known to attract visitors for its quirky antique shops and nature lovers flocking to Brown County State Park seeking outdoor adventures, Nashville is the quintessential tourist town.

But something else is brewing here. Something BIG.

Beer!

Big Woods Brewing Company is nestled in the heart of downtown Nashville in a beautiful timber frame brew house. Founded in 2009 by Tim O’Bryan, Ed Ryan, and Jeff McCabe, Big Woods Brewing Company is dedicated to creating great beer, and their mantra ‘The Woods Abide’ has helped create a culture where everyone is welcome and Common Goodness Prevails. Recently, in order to meet the demands of their craft beer fans, Quaff On! Brewing Company was formed in 2012 as the production brewery for the beers developed at Big Woods.

That simply means you…yes you…can swing into your local bottle shop and get your paws on these wonderful beers!

My fiancé and I nestled up to the cozy bar on our recent visit. We ordered a flight of all 8 beers on tap, including staples Hare Trigger (IPA), Yellow Dwarf (wheat), Six Foot Blonde (blond), and their flagship Busted Knuckle (a delicious concoction that could be classified as a porter, brown, amber or all three at once depending on your palate). After a quick bite of pulled pork nachos (an absolute must…trust me. The pork is smoked right outside the brewpub), we were fortunate enough to bump into Big Woods head brewer Martin Gradolf. Martin took us on a tour of the brewery highlighting what all Big Woods have up their proverbial sleeve.

And Indiana beer fans rejoice! There are a lot of great things happening here!

In addition to the beers available at the brewery and pizza company, Gradolf is also responsible for brewing the beer served at Quaff On! Bloomington. While showing us the fermenters, Martin let us sample a Belgian Trippel and Hazelnut Java Porter he’s been working on…both were phenomenal and assured my taste buds that I would be returning soon!

Martin then took us on a tour of the Big Woods Village, which includes the brewery, Big Woods Pizza Company, a tasting room where Martin’s beers can be sampled, and according to Gradolf, a distillery will be added in the very near future.

From the looks of it, when it is all completed this spring/summer it’s going to be awesome!

“Big Woods/Quaff On! employs over a hundred people. It’s doing awesome things for Nashville,” Gradolf commented referring to Big Woods Village.

He’s right.

There are BIG things happening at Big Woods Brewing Company. Awesome things.

So the next time you hear someone suggest a visit to little Nashville, beer lovers take note…and abide.

Friends and I went down to Nashville last winter and we’re advised to check out Big Woods and we were so pleased that we did. Tim and his staff were wonderful and made us feel like family. We tried flights of their amazing beers as well as the pulled pork nachos. Ialso got the pulled pork sliders with an awesome jalapeño coleslaw. I hope to get back to Big Woods soon to see all the progress they’ve made and recommend you do too.
