By Cory Huffman for Indiana On Tap

Awhile back I alluded to 5 towns that were deserving of a brewery. Now, I’m not Nostradamus, but number one on my list was Zionsville. Low and behold, Noble Order Brewing out of Richmond is opening a tap room downtown. Number 2 on my list was Madison. Sure enough, Dylan Rose (formerly of Bloomington Brewing Company) is taking the plunge and opening Righteous Brewing Company in the historic Jefferson County town.

I recently caught up with Dylan to hear all about Righteous and his decision for opening his business in Madison.

“Living so close to Madison. I’ve always been a fan of the town. The small historic downtown is beautiful, very crafty, and filled with amazing people. After I met with the Chamber of Commerce, and receiving their support, I was absolutely sold.”

Like myself, Dylan is a Milan guy. His favorite teacher in school was none other than my cousin Richard Dobson. However, unlike most people that only think of basketball when it comes to Milan, Dylan Rose turned his attention away from being the next Bobby Plump to brewing at an early age. Instead of making jump shots, he started making wine, and there he found his passion.

“I was living in Bloomington at the time going to school and I immediately changed my major to business management and entrepreneurship. Because at the time I was thinking how sweet it would be to open a winery one day. On my 21st birthday I ran into the Brew master for Bloomington brewing company and talked for a couple hours about beer and fermentation in general. The day I started working at a brewery was the day I decided to eventually open a brewery. I fell in love with the lifestyle and people behind it. Not only did I learn from BBC, I got to meet tons of people in the industry that continue to help me with things today. I worked on my business the whole time I was working there and going to school. After 3 years at BBC I had enough research, experience, and courage to do it on my own.”

And he is doing it. When talking with Dylan it’s not hard to gauge his passion and excitement for beer, his company, and the town of Madison.

“Beer is more than a passion of mine. I am literally putting everything I possibly can into making Righteous Brewing Company something special.”

Always curious about branding, I asked how he came up with the name.

“I was brainstorming and the word righteous kept coming to me and I was like, ‘well, that’s kinda righteous’. So it started to stick.”

The brewery’s slogan – “Drink Something Righteous” – is pretty catchy as well.

Righteous Brewing Company will be located in a historic building in Downtown Madison, housing a 7 bbl system and serving a modern American food menu. Dylan told me that he hopes to have the brew house open later this year and that the brewery will have a 10 tap setup consisting of 5 house brews in year one. The plan is to brew a blonde, pale, IPA, stout, and amber.

Stay tuned for more information about Righteous Brewing Company as Dylan’s hard work continues to unfold.
