Thanks to the rise in craft beer production, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor has not only remained busy during slow periods, but last year they received the most shipments since the port opened in 1970.
The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor sits in Portage, Indiana, on Lake Michigan. It brings in cargo from all across the world. Over the past couple years, the port has seen an uptick in cargo shipments containing brewery equipment, specifically fermentation tanks.
Plenty of breweries are opening throughout the Lake Michigan area. Chicago is becoming a craft beer hotbed and with more big name breweries opening locations in the city, Michigan offers plenty of great craft breweries and Northern Indiana is seeing an uptick in breweries opening.
The importation of brewery fermentation tanks hasn’t been the only reason the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor has seen a rise in cargo, but it’s definitely helped. As the craft beer industry continues to expand, and more breweries open up around the Lake Michigan area, one can only surmise the Port will continue to remain busy and possibly break some more records.
