06 May Bad Dad Brewing To Release Tsar Bomba Bottles With Party on May 19th
by Mark E. Lasbury for Indiana On Tap
Bad Dad Brewery in Fairmount opened just 11 short months ago, yet they’re already preparing for their first bottle release. Never ones to go small, Patrick and Barry Howard have brewed a Russian Imperial Stout called Tsar Bomba. This RIS is the biggest beer Bad Dad has made to date, so why not give it the name of a big Soviet bomb? Tsar Bomba was the American code name for the Russian hydrogen bomb test in 1961.
The party is on for May 19th at the Bad Dad taproom from 3pm – 10pm, and will allow everyone to get pours of the Tsar Bomba as well as buy bottles. Three variants will be available on draft, the base beer RIS at 10% ABV, a bourbon barrel aged variant, and a top shelf bourbon barrel that comes off with even smoother and deeper characteristics. Since the top shelf bourbon variant is a collaboration between Russian and American alcoholic beverages, Bad Dad is choosing to call it Collusion.
But you should neither dilly nor dally, there are only 48 bottles of Collusion available for purchase (22oz. for $20). Twenty bucks for a limited edition RIS is normal, for this one it’s a steal (I’ve tasted the BBA version). The draft pours will be 10 oz for $7 of Collusion and $6 for the other two versions of Tsar Bomba, and will last as long as there is beer in the kegs, which may be a mere matter of hours.
Luckily, there will be several other Bad Dad beers on tap, including a blood orange IPA called Bloody Harry, Bodacious Blonde, and the Hoboken Hophead DDH DIPA that has garnered a 3.99 score on UnTappd. In addition to the beer, Grains & Grill restaurant will be providing free appetizers in the taproom to go with your beer. Take a look at the Grains & Grain menu online, and you’ll get idea of the high end comfort food appetizers that will be served.
If you can’t make it to the bottle release party, you may miss out on Tsar Bomba and its variants that day and will certainly miss out on the bombers, but perhaps you’ll be able to find a BBA Tsar Bomba keg on tap at local restaurants. Patrick has agreements with Savage’s Alehouse and 5’s Tap Room in Anderson, with a few more to be announced soon. I’d suggest contacting them to know when the kegs will go on, they won’t last long.
This is just the beginning for Bad Dad. Look for more bottle releases in the coming months, as well as an expansion of the brewhouse in the not so far off future that will allow them to put more beer into area bars and restaurants. If you haven’t had a chance to try the beers of this Bad Dad, the bottle release party makes for an excellent opportunity to try them out.
