In the corner of a strip mall complex off SR-135 in Greenwood sits MashCraft Brewing, innocuous in its exterior presentation but ready to serve up some delicious beer and entertainment inside. For those of you who have been to MashCraft before, you don’t have to be told how friendly the bartenders are, how boot-stomping the musical acts can be, or how kegs and eggs on a Sunday morning can be the perfect remedy for whatever happened the night before. If you haven’t made it down south to try their beer, it’s a great place to stop with your Indiana on Tap Tasting Society Marketplace coupon for a starter flight.

MashCraft’s flagship offerings are solid across the board, but this winter they are really shining with several different takes on The Deep, a rich oatmeal stout with malty and chocolatey notes. Last week’s offering, tapped on Tuesday the 10th and running through Tuesday the 17th, was the Plum Deep. It is what it says on the label – their oatmeal stout infused with sweet plums. When poured it was a very rich dark brown with a tan head.

Served cold, Plum Deep has all the characteristics of a good oatmeal stout plus a little extra depth lent by the sweetness and fruity flavor of the plums. If you allow it to get to room temperature while you chat with your neighbor, you will find that the sweetness becomes more and more mellow before finally evolving into a little hint of tart on the finish.

Plum Deep isn’t all that head brewer Andrew Castner has up his sleeve this winter, though. Tapped on Tuesday the 17th is the Vanilla Deep, to be followed on the 24th by Peppermint Deep. Previously tapped was the Capsicum Deep, infused with chili peppers. To cap off the Exploring the Deep series, Mashcraft will host a party on the same day they tap their peppermint infusion. The Deep End Cupcake Jubilee will boast each previously tapped version of The Deep available for flights, samples, pints, and for take-home. Additionally, Simply Divine Cupcakes will be on hand with sweet treats to pair with each iteration of the beer.
