Craft brewing has been called “the hottest industry in Northwest Indiana.”
A growing number of new breweries, including St. John Malt Brothers Brewing, Burn ‘Em Brewing, in Michigan City, Twisted K-8 Brewing, in LaPorte, and Route 2 Brews, in Lowell, have sprung up in the Region over the last few years.
The economic impact of beer – from both microbreweries and macros like Chicago-based MillerCoors – is now pretty significant in Northwest Indiana. A study by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association found the beer industry has an economic impact of $418 million in the 1st Congressional District, which includes Lake and Porter counties, and Michigan City.
In Northwest Indiana, the beer industry was responsible for 3,838 jobs, including those it supports such as hops farmers, truck drivers and liquor store clerks, and an estimated $131.3 million in wages last year, according to the Beer Serves America study… CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY AT NWI TIMES
