As much as I love craft beer, sometimes I have a taste for something else. Beer cocktails, the combination of beer and booze, seems to be popping up all over the place in both bars and restaurants. Often these are overlooked, but here are a few reasons why they are worth a shot.
1. You want a mixed drink, but they’re just so damn sweet – Some cocktails are so loaded with sugar and syrup that you can’t tell if you’re feeling a buzz or a sugar high. Supplementing the traditional recipe with a beer (especially a quality IPA) cuts some of the sweetness and provides a more mellowed flavor. This works really well for margaritas.

2. You’re not into beer, but you want to try – For those that haven’t ventured into the craft beer scene, beer cocktails can serve a stepping stone before committing to a whole pint.
3. You want the best of both worlds – For those days when both a beer and a mixed drink sounds good, but you’re just out for one round. Drinks like a Black Velvet (stout + champagne) or Snake Bite (cider + beer) can serve as the happy medium between beverage types.
4. You need something to quench your thirst – As much as I love a good 100 IBU IPA, after spending hours in the summer heat I typically stay away. Not every beer is as crisp and refreshing as a fresh summer cocktail. A drink called The End Zone (combo of beer, Bourbon, and lemonade) can be a happy ending to your scorching day.
The only way to know if a beer cocktail is right for you is to try it out. The possibilities for the harmonious booze & beer combos are endless. I’m a big fan of the beer margarita and The End Zone myself but I plan on continuing to explore this under-appreciated drink realm.
Cheers,
Traxler
