Upland Brew Co. New Beer Release: Barrel Chested Barleywine

Picture

The relationship between cooper and oak barrel has long been respected and revered. The honored tradition of aging bourbon and wine in recent years has inspired brewers to experiement with barrel aging beer and the results are exquisite. At Upland we’ve just scratched the surface of our barrel aging program and we’re proud to share our latest endeavor…

This complex strong ale pours a beautiful deep copper with hues of bright mahogany and a creamy tan head. The essence of rich caramel, biscuit, toffee, and fig are coalesced during a long maturation period in oak barrels previously used by the Willett Distilling Company which arrive at the brewery still dripping with bourbon (which our brewers didn’t let go to waste). Over time, these barrels add their own flavor contributions of vanilla, tosated oak, and sweet bourbon undertones. At 9.5% ABV, this beer is a gentle giant with a seductive sweetness and intriguing complexity.

About the Brewery:  Located in Bloomington, Indiana, Upland’s rich history dates all the way back to 1998. Taking traditional recipes and making them a bit more awesome, Upland Brewing Co. came up with their own recipes rooted with inspiration from good beer and good friends, providing a fresh local option to their communities. The name Upland comes from the term geologists gave to this area of Southern Indiana land which was never overrun by the glaciers that flattened much of Indiana’s landscape. The adversity of the land bred independent thinkers who had strong wills, a connection to the land, and a wry sense of humor about life. Upland’s approach to brewing beer honors the spirit of these people and this place.
