With so many craft beer events happening all over the state each and every weekend, the odds are against you for a perfect, sunny day each time.

And if I know one thing from being a Hoosier my whole life, it’s that you can’t trust Indiana weather. I’ve gone to many beer events and experienced the wrath of Mother Nature, so here are some tips I’ve learned the hard way that I’ll pass on so you don’t have to do the same:

-Check the weather beforehand; you need to know if you’re going up against some sprinkles or a monsoon.

-Do some research about the event. Can you bring umbrellas? How many tents will there be? Is there enough room for you and your posse to congregate between pours?

-Invest in Ziplocks. These bags truly are a genius invention and beneficial with any level of precipitation. They’ll keep your money, ID and phone safe from water damage. The few cents you’ll pay per bag are well worth the peace of mind of keeping your belongings safe.

-Buy a good poncho. This might seem like a no brainer, but quality is important. If you invest in a 99 cent plastic bag, you can expect to get wet. Springing for the $3 to $5 items will mean a thicker layer of plastic and, ultimately, better overall protection.

-Leave the pretzels at home; I’ve witnessed pretzels disintegrate before my eyes into soppy wet goo.

-Wear appropriate shoes; go for something that’s going to keep your feet dry as well as give you stability in the swamps. I’ve been that idiot sliding down a hill because of some crappy sandals.

Tips for trying to beat Mother Nature aside, though, the most important piece of advice I can give is not to let the weather ruin your fun. The only reason people get discouraged is because they are uncomfortable and unprepared.

As long as you come prepared to take on the weather, any event still can be a great one. Good friends and awesome Indiana beer are always a good time, even if you get a little wet.
