Have you spent the winter drinking good beer and skipping on exercise? Are you suddenly realizing that summer is upon us and bringing with it beach vacations, pool parties, and various other reasons to be outside without your winter coat covering your beer loving body? Finding that perfect balance between drinking good beer and exercising can be difficult, but it is entirely possible.
First, find something that you enjoy doing. Two of my favorite pass times are running and drinking delicious, local beer. Although they may seem like polar opposites, they have a lot in common. They are both typically done socially, and the partakers of each have a strong passion for what they love. Moreover, although I do enjoy most training runs, I love the thrill of racing even more. So I train all year, for distances from a mile to a marathon, and complete in more than a dozen races a year. Most every running race includes a free beer or two at the end of the race, and it is commonly something local. Take, for example, my next race and summer series, the Run(317) races. You get two free pints of Thr3e Wise Men beer after the race. So, I get to have my cake and eat it too!
If running is not for you, cycling is another great option because you can get a good workout in, converse with friends while riding, and make a stop at a local brewery near the end of the ride.
If neither of those works for you, find something that can be social or involves a structured group of people. If you have a partner or class to attend, it will keep you accountable and make the commitment easier. Some options include CrossFit, boot camp gyms, and regular group fitness classes at any local gym.
If you’ve noticed, there are two themes here: 1) enjoy the beer in moderation, such as two good beers after a race or good hard workout and 2) ALWAYS have the beer after your workout, never before. Nothing deters you from wanting to exercise more than a couple of good beers.
