Back on July 1, 2015,
House Bill 1542 went into effect in Indiana. Why is that significant? Because tucked away at the very end of the bill is this: “Removes provisions that:…(2) restrict selling alcoholic beverages on Christmas.”Yep, you read that right. Starting this Christmas, Hoosiers will be able to purchase their favorite beer, wine or liquor – at any retail or food establishment that is open – for the first time since Prohibition was established.
I, for one, am excited by this new legislation. One can get a little burnt out as the day wears on and there is nothing like a nice, cold, Indiana-made craft beer to celebrate the end of the day with. And now you don’t have to plan ahead, trying to figure out what kind of beer you’ll be in the mood for come Christmas night.
This is also great news for families who are forced to eat Christmas dinner at their local Chinese restaurant because a pack of roving dogs destroyed the dinner turkey. At least now they will be able to imbibe at the restaurant.
But what happens when Christmas falls on Sunday, like it does next year? Will Indiana’s atrocious, archaic laws about no retail sales of alcohol still stand? Unfortunately, they will, according to Indiana State Excise Corporal Brandon Thomas who spoke with the Indy Star, as quoted by CBS4 Indy.
With all of the negative news surrounding the craft beer industry right now – AB InBev distributor incentive program and the FDA requiring nutritional labels – this is at least happy news.
Will you be buying alcohol on Christmas this year?
