15 Jul Upland Brewery Sweeps Awards at Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup
INDIANAPOLIS – Upland Brewing Company took home all the big awards in the professional division of the Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup competition over the weekend. The Bloomington brewery was named Indiana Brewery of the Year and Grand Champion Brewery of the Year. It also won the Best of Show award for its “VinoSynth Red,” winner of the Belgian and French Ale category.
Overall, Upland had six Top 3 finishes in the 24 different beer categories, including two first-place brews. This is the fourth consecutive year that Upland has won the Best of Show trophy, which goes to the highest-rated of the 24 gold medal winners. The three previous years, they won the award with their Helios Pale Ale.
Evan Brill, Louisville, Ky., won the Home Brew division’s Best of Show award with his Vienna Lager that beat out the other 815 beers entered. As a result, he will have his winning recipe brewed and served at the Broad Ripple Brew Pub.
The Home Brew Club of the Year went to Foam Blowers of Indiana, an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned club that was founded in the 1980s and is based in the Indianapolis area.
More than 100 judges from all over the country tasted and rated the beers in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion. Silver and bronze medals were also awarded in each of the categories, which range from American Ales to Spice/Herb/Vegetable beer. Winning recipes and brewers will be represented at the Indiana Brewers’ Cup display located in the Indiana Beer and Wine Exhibition during the Indiana State Fair, Aug. 1 – 17.
The Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup is a qualifying event for the Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing (MCAB), meaning first-place winners in each of the 24 different homebrew categories are qualified to compete in the MCAB championship competition.
