Shoreline Brewery Wins Gold at 15th Annual Festival of Barrel Aged Beers

Shoreline Brewery, alongside over two hundred of the best breweries from across the country, participated in the 15th annual Festival of Barrel Aged Beers (FOBAB) at the UIC Forum on Saturday in Chicago.

Shoreline Brewery was proud to take home the gold medal in the fruit beer category for their Imperial Raspberry aged in a red wine barrel. This is the second gold medal awarded in this category for Shoreline Brewery over the past three competitions. The Imperial Raspberry is a recipe by brewmaster and founder Sam Strupeck that Shoreline has been brewing since 2010.

Over one hundred pounds of raspberries go into every batch, with forty pounds in the boil and an additional sixty pounds added over the first five days of fermentation. This creates a strong, complex ale that shines with fruit flavor. The gold medal vintage Imperial Raspberry was aged in French Oak Pinot Noir barrels for over a year.

The Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer is not only about sampling many of the rarest beers around.  Before any beer is tasted by the public, a panel of industry experts judge each beer in the National Wood Aged Beer Competition against a set of standard guidelines.

Each judge has experience with barrel aging or significant sensory experience, and award gold, silver and bronze medals in eleven categories. Rather than beers being judged largely on wood aging and strength, categories are broken down to also reflect the underlying beer style. Each beer is judged on the basis of how that underlying style reflects the expression of wood and/or barrel character. Some of the most experienced judges will also select a best of show and runner up to best of show from among the category winners.
