While creeping on Facebook I came across Pokro Brewing Company’s Facebook page the other day, the first thing I noticed was the plethora of events they have going on. There’s something pretty much every week. My eyes fell on the big words “YOGA AND BEER” and I was sold. The $20 ticket price for an hour of yoga and a pint of beer fit reasonably into my budget. Considering a drop-in yoga class in NWI is anywhere from $12-15, it seemed like a pretty good deal.

I’ve taken up yoga this past year to combat my stress level caused by graduate school. I am no expert yogi, but I’ve been to my fair share of classes. I went with my boyfriend, who has done about 1 hour of yoga in his lifetime. Then again it was yoga at a brewery – how difficult could it be?

We arrived about 10 minutes before the class started to scope it out. Normally there is space for cornhole and darts in the back of the taproom, but everything was already moved to make space for us. We took our spot on the cement floor next to the dart board set and eagerly awaited the start of class. The instructor Kristina Standley (link: https://www.facebook.com/kstandyoga?fref=nf) was very personable and understood the fact that not everyone was on the same level (phew). After about 10 minutes and 5 chaturanga sequences, I was sweating bullets. The pose sequences incorporated a lot more strength exercises than my average fitness level was accustomed to, so that was a challenge in itself. Knowing that there was a cold pint waiting for me after fueled my motivation to push through the class.

Once the class concluded everyone migrated over to the bar in the front of the taproom where we each got a pint to reward ourselves for our hard work. I opted for the Caveman, a brown ale with plenty of toffee flavor and a roasted malt backbone. My boyfriend tried the CAMMIT!, a lighter bodied wheat ale brewed with chamomile (very appropriate after our holistic yoga session). It’s still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that I am sore after working out at a brewery.

Aside from the Yoga and Beer, they have several other events ranging from painting and crafting to a beer and chocolate pairing. As far as events AND beer selections, there’s really something for everyone at Pokro.
