New Brewpub To Anchor Riverfront District In Shelbyville

For Immediate Release – Local business owners Greg Kelsay, Ron Kelsay, and Bill Poland of Genesis Property Development are partnering with Columbus-based 450 North Brewery and Simmons Winery owners David and Brenda (Kelsay) Simmons to open a brewpub in downtown Shelbyville.

Riverfront Taproom will be the first new business in Shelbyville’s newly created Riverfront District. The 250 seat restaurant and brewery will open in the former Kiefer’s Furniture Store. The centerpiece of the full service bar will be 32 taps of Indiana craft beer, including the full line-up of 450 North Brewing Co. beers and hard ciders. The remaining taps will showcase other Indiana craft brewery favorites. Riverfront Taproom will have its own brewery operation onsite and will make small batch specialty and seasonal craft beers under the 450 North label.

Another unique feature of the operation is a wine tasting room. Riverfront Taproom will carry wine products from Simmons Winery. Customers can enjoy wine tasting or purchase wine by the glass. Customers will also be able to purchase carry out wine in bottles and beer in 4-pack cans or 64 ounce growlers, even on Sundays.

Brick oven pizza will be the featured menu item for the family dining restaurant, along with
appetizers, salads, gourmet burgers and other select entrees. A kids menu will be available as well. The kitchen will utilize fresh vegetables from local farmers along with meat, cheese and other ingredients from Indiana producers.

An interior feature of the 9,500 square foot brewpub is a banquet room that seats up to 45 people. “If you are looking for a meeting space to accommodate 30 people that can provide food, there are limited options in Shelbyville,” says co-owner and local resident Bill Poland.

Complete with AV equipment, the specially designed space will be ideal for business meetings,
corporate events, groups, parties, rehearsal dinners and more.

Located at 530 North Harrison Street, the property is adjacent to the Big Blue River. Plans call for a 25’ by 75’ outdoor deck to cantilever over the 12’ drop to the river bank below. “With the Riverfront Taproom’s picture perfect location on State Road 9 and just south of I-74, we expect a huge draw from not only the locals, but also from craft beer, hard cider, and wine lovers from Indianapolis to Cincinnati,” says David Simmons.

“The goal of this partnership is to create much more than just a successful restaurant and brewery,” says co-owner Greg Kelsay. “Every person in our ownership group has longstanding ties to Shelbyville. We are making a significant investment to help revitalize the downtown area and bring economic growth and development into our city.” The project wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation and financial support of local officials.

According to Ron Kelsay, “Shelbyville Mayor Tom DeBaun and MainStreet Shelbyville executive director Brandy Coomes have been instrumental in working with and supporting our project team.” Mayor Debaun released the following statement: “The Shelbyville Common Council and the Shelby County Council collaborated on a forgivable loan which was awarded to assist in the funding of infrastructure and building improvements related to the redevelopment of the former Keifer Furniture site. This new development will add a missing element to the downtown that will complement the trails and downtown redevelopment plans which are underway.”

Locally based construction manager and co-owner of the project, Genesis Property Development, has already begun full scale planning, design and engineering of the property. The interior space and building exterior will be completely transformed. Riverfront Taproom is set to open this summer.
