Modern Times Brewing Lingers in NWI After Dark Lord Day- But You’d Better Find Them Quick

Dark Lord Day was last weekend (May 19), but the remnants of the event are several. A few people are just starting to sober up and have memory gaps that are slowly filling in. The Dark Lord bottles are quickly making their way across the country via trades and outright sales (shh!), and attendees are still talking about all the great breweries that poured on that Saturday. Forget about Dark Lord Day being a local or even regional event, the brewery list shows that this festival is truly national.

If you don’t think DLD is national – the image credit for this photo goes to ABQ Beer Geek – as in Alburquerque, NM.

Cigar City, Perennial, Barrel Theory from St. Paul, Gigantic from Portland, Pizza Port, etc. were some of the 50+ breweries that came in from all over the country. There were also local favorites like Half Acre, Revolution, New Oberfaltz, Scarlet Lane, and 18th Street, et. to keep a hometown/home state feel. However, one brewery that came for the first time felt it was important to make just a slightly bigger impression on Northwest Indiana. Modern Times Brewing of San Diego/Los Angeles had beer at the festival, but also sprinkled some of its beer throughout Northwest Indiana, on taps and in packages.

As reported first on Guys Drinking Beer (here), the national sales director for Modern Times is from the region, growing up just south of FFF in Dyer, IN. He went to high school with one of the FFF bartenders and was a help in figuring out which beer bars to seed with a little Modern Times beer. Guys drinking Beer went on to say that distributor Indiana Beverage was enlisted to help place beer in bars and package stores.

Since the original article came out on the 21st, I wanted to be sure some of the beer was left on tap and in the stores before sending you all on a wild goose chase. See the original article for the full list of places that Modern Times beer landed, but as of 2:00 pm Eastern time on Saturday, the 26th, I can confirm that Triangle Liquors in Valpo has some Fruitlands Gose, Wise Guys in Merrillville had the coffee stour, the Hazy IPA and the gose, The Liquor Stop in Highland had a couple of different styles from Modern Times, and Pat’s Liquors in Porter had a bit left of the three styles. However, All the Nick’s Liquors either never got any of the beer or are out (it wasn’t the clearest conversation),  and Cask ‘N Cellar in Dyer as well as County Seat in Crown Point are completely out of Modern Times beer.

The websites at both Twincade in Griffith and Beer Geeks in Highland have been updated very recently and both show that they have Modern Times on tap. See the original article for a full list of the outlets and for more history on Modern Times and their philosophy of business.
