Meeting Up With The Devil…Sort Of

Welcome to my second installment of Beer Scout Basics. I hope everyone enjoyed my first write up about my visit to Lafayette Brewing Company. Today’s installment takes me north to the corner of I-65 and US 30 in Merriville, Indiana. I have seen Devil’s Trumpet listed on the Untappd app, Yelp and the IndianaOnTap interactive map, but my travels never put me in town with enough time to stop by. I changed all that recently. By the way, those three resources are my road map to finding microbreweries across my travels. They are great and I use all of them to get the information I need, such as: where a brewery is, what kind of beers they serve and if and when they are open.

Devil’s Trumpet is located a little bit south of US 30 down Utah Road. Don’t be fooled when you pull up as the tasting room is at the back of the building. They have a nice little bar area with some table top seating as well. While I was there it was packed. Because of that I chose not to eat and the beer staff was a little busy to give me much inside information on the brews.

Devil’s Trumpet offers $2.00; 4 ounce pours on their flights. The flight is not a set number and they had the best flight card I have seen. It’s about fifteen inches long by four inches wide and it is preprinted with the name of the beer and the ABV. The beers were set on their corresponding circle. This is great as I am always trying to remember which pour is which. I guess the seasonal brews would not go on this but I kept to their standard selections. Let me say I really liked all four beers I tried; but I rank’em here on BeerScoutBasics by what tasted best to me on my visit. So here we go…

  1. Night Goat a 6.5% ABV, Milk / Sweet Stout. My favorite of the visit. The Goat had a nice coffee aroma and finish. I am usually not a Milk / Sweet Stout guy. Maybe it’s the colder weather; but I have tried a few recently and have really enjoyed them.
  2. Puffy Stack an 8.0% ABV, Black IPA. I am a sucker for IPA’s and Black IPA’s just taste really good to me. You can’t go wrong with this one but watch that ABV if you’re driving.
  3. Make it a Cheeseburger a 6.6%, America IPA. Jimmy Buffet’s favorite beer in Paradise is a very tasty, mild hopped IPA. If you are curious but have not jumped into the IPA pool, try this one.
  4. My Ghetto a 7.2%% ABV, Imperial Pale Ale. I hate to even put this down as number four because it was so good. But even in the Olympics someone has to finish last. This is very hoppy and very tasty. If you are into the hop, then try My Ghetto.

That’s it for this installment. Thanks for checking out BeerScoutBasics. And remember when keeping it to the basics; drink what tastes good to YOU!

I was thinking of visiting this one myself – thanks for checking it out and I’ll get there sooner than later! Always a fan of the Milk Stout – glad to hear it was tasty.

I want to order another My Ghetto, but that name…
Night Goat sounds worthy of a trip to Merrilville from CP.
