Craft beer to Peyton Manning: Come on, man!

Super Bowl Sunday is a rough time for craft breweries. The airwaves leading up to and day of the big game are dominated by ads for macrobrewers, pushing their fizzy yellow water under the guise of “drinkability without pretentiousness.” The past two years have been especially volatile, with AB InBev buying commercial space during the Super Bowl to flat out attack craft beer brewers and their fans.

Craft brewers took another shot on the chin this year when, in a postgame interview, Bronco’s quarterback Peyton Manning told NBC’s Tracy Woolfson and the millions of people around the world watching, “I’m going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight.”

Ugh.

As if the Sultans of Swill needed any more bumps, here was one of the most recognizable faces in American pop culture giving Budweiser some love for the world to see. Whether he actually drinks Budweiser or even if he owns a few Bud distributors, come on, Peyton.

This week, the Brewers Association and director Julie Herz extended a little love to the quality beer-starved walking billboard by way of a warm letter and some free beer from Colorado’s amazing craft breweries. (Also, a good column from our friend Amy Haneline with the Star on beers Peyton should be drinking instead)

“We wanted to share some craft beers from the over 4,000 small and independent craft breweres in Colorado and beyond,” Herz wrote. “During the off-season, we’d invite you to visit your local craft brewery and learn more about the booming craft brewing industry, which has been scoring lots of touchdowns with beer lovers.”

When the macro industry tries to drown out craft beer with negative ads and million dollar putdowns, craft beer responds warmly and with an invitation to have a beer and learn a little more about America’s greatest product. Cheers to Herz, and Peyton: here’s a little tool to introduce you to the many breweries in the many cities you live in and visit.
