19 Feb Chef Lawrence Scully the star of TwoDeep Brewing Co.’s beer dinner
One of the many things I love about Indianapolis is its vibrant food truck scene. We’re so incredibly fortunate to have the trucks we have, each filling a unique niche with their top notch fare, from Scratch Truck’s famous burgers, to Dhaba Indy serving up my favorite Indian food around, to Taste of the Caribbean’s conch fritter sandwich, to Gaucho’s Fire Brazilian steak sandwich and more. If you can’t find anything good from one of Indy’s food trucks, you’re a lost soul.
We wouldn’t have these outstanding trucks with the amazing chefs manning their grills, and on Friday, February 11th, TwoDeep Brewing Co. opened their doors to a small number of guests and let Pi Indy’s Chef Lawrence Scully put together a beer paired dinner unlike any I’ve ever attended.
We kicked off the night with a quick tour of the downtown brewery’s space, while owner and brewer Andy Meyer took us through the history of TwoDEEP and where he’s planning on taking the brewery in the next few years. To kick off the food portion of the night, we sampled beet deviled eggs (the best deviled eggs I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of deviled eggs). Look at the color on those bad boys.
Our third course was a beautifully assembled salad of beets, pears, greens, and a sexually explicit slab of fried goat cheese, served with a Red Sunday Irish ale strawberry vinaigrette drizzle, paired with the delicious roasty Irish ale. Following a piece of pate with fried goat cheese is almost unfair, and at this point I would have followed Chef Scully through the gates of hell if he asked me.
The fourth “main” course was a beautiful cooked New Zealand lamb chop with a coffee rub that Chef Scully prepared in the Pi Indy truck’s over, served ontop risotto and shaved truffles with a Jolly Old Stout red eye gravy. Decadent, and paired perfectly with the sweet roasty flavors of the Jolly Old Stout. This dish would be well received at any top-end bistro or steak house, which is a testament to Chef Scully’s understanding both of the food and the equipment he works with.
As is so often with these dinners, it’s not just the food or beer that makes the night special: I was fortunate enough to sit next to two amazing couples, two gentlemen who were taking a night of relaxtion in the midst of wedding planning, and a couple all the way from Toledo, OH who were taking in the Indiana craft beer scene while visiting their son. It’s amazing what conversations you can strike up with complete strangers when you share two simple passions: great food and great beer.
Cheers to TwoDEEP and Chef Lawrence Scully for an amazing evening. If you missed out on the food or beer, be sure to follow Pi Indy on Twitter and keep up on their location (the fan favorite margherita pizza is a must) and be sure to stop in at TwoDEEP for some delicious Indiana beer.
