Tucked off of Allisonville Road across from Conner Prairie is a Hamilton County treasure called Prairie Guest House. A bed and breakfast since the early nineties, it has recently been taken over by John and Karen Newton. They have made some renovations to the space that makes it an exquisite, quiet, and affordable getaway. It is incredibly close to some amazing breweries as well such as the Sun King Taproom, Books and Brews, Heady Hollow, and Redemption.

The property is made up of four main buildings. The guest house is the oldest and was built in 1852 by the attorney Fabius Finch. It has nine guest rooms ranging in styles and size. The one that I was fortunate enough to stay in had a king size bed and a very large, luxurious bathroom.

The main house was originally built in 1907 on the property which is now Conner Prairie. The house was moved to its current location in the early 1980s. It has one room for guests. There is a very large dining room and sunroom in which to lounge or eat. The main house is great for events. The dining room seats 40 people so it’s perfect for dinner parties, showers, weddings, receptions, and reunions. In fact, we at Indiana on Tap are planning to have a Tasting Society Marketplace member exclusive event there in October.

The grounds are beautiful and spacious as well. There are a variety of flowers and outdoor seating. A vegetable and herb garden are kept from which they harvest items for the breakfasts they serve their guests. My breakfast included broccoli and radishes from the garden as well as eggs, an english muffin, bacon, and delicious juice.

The barn, built in the early 1900s, is currently in repair. The Newton Family has permission from city officials to turn it into a restaurant. With how everything else at the Prairie Guest House is, I can only assume that the restaurant will also be amazing.

Relaxation is the theme at this beautiful bed and breakfast. The staff makes you feel right at home. I can’t wait to visit again.
