The weather is gnarly. It’s a sweltering 95 degrees — which is just about incomprehensible for a San Franciscan — and I’m shuffling around the Paso Robles County Fairgrounds with 2,999 other sweaty beer tasters, shifting between booths emblazoned with names of the breweries Firestone Walker has handpicked to serve the sunscreen’d masses.

“The tickets sold out in like 30 seconds,” a young guy in a Warriors shirt tells me as we wait in line for a taste from St. Louis’ Side Project. He and his friends who managed to score tickets, he says, rent a house nearby every year just for the event.

This festival is for those with a curious palate; for those who don’t shudder at the idea of not one, but two breweries that have included cucumber-flavored beers in their offerings, and for those who can weather sipping a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout in torrid heat. This event is for those that revel in the fact that the brewers they’re toasting with here are the best of the best, at least by Firestone’s standards.
