Just Another Tuesday Night: Science, Beer, and a Burlesque Show

Being the huge nerd I am, I was psyched to find out that an organization like Pint of Science was doing events in my city.

Pint of Science is an organization founded in London that brings science into the local communities. The goal is to bring the scientists to you, and that learning doesn’t have a finite ending. With over 10 countries, this movement is literally sweeping the globe.

Pint of Science complements the Indianapolis organization CINSO perfectly. Central Indiana Science Outreach program has a very similar vision and goal. They have lecture series once a month and are planning to start up a science-themed book club every other month. This makes my inner nerd so incredibly happy.

Indiana City Brewing was one of three gracious hosts for this 3-day science spectacular. They provided a crucial component to this event, the fresh local beer. I was able to try the Double Tribute, a citrus IPA, and Son of War, a Belgian blond ale that may be a new personal favorite.

On Tuesday night, the particular event was called “Our Society” which focused on sex education and a great performance by Angel Burlesque, one of the best rated burlesque troops in the city. The Angels performance was witty, hilarious, sensual, and of course incredible tasteful and relevant to the audience. It was a good warm-up, so to speak, for the speaker ahead. Angela Potter, a science historian (didn’t know this position existed but sounds incredibly interesting) delved into some of the intricacies and teaching methods for sex education in our countries past and present. So much goes into effective communication, and she brought some great insight to the topic.

These Pint of Science events range from topics like this one to zoology to technology. It was nice for me to see so many like-minded adults within the Indianapolis community. Bier Brewing and Black Acre have volunteered their facilities to be home to these great events and provide their science expertise (i.e. quality brews) to the events. I hope to see many more of these great events to come.

To Science!
