Drinking in knowledge: Local beer aficionados become certified cicerones

Seven years ago, Ray Daniels’ vision of crafting legions of beer sommeliers appeared to be fizzling out.

Looking at his calendar, he thought, “Who am I going to work for next year.”

It was a rare hiccup in what had been a successful rise through the craft beer industry. From making his own home brew in 1989, Daniels had gone on to winning and running home brew beer competitions, wrote, published or edited more than two dozen books on the subject of craft beer, and promoted the craft beer industry with the Brewers Association.

Eventually, Daniels decided to use the vast experience he gained to create the Cicerone Certification Program. It is designed to better educate those selling and serving the growing numbers of craft beers around the world.
